What are chick flicks?

‘Chick flicks’ is a colloquial term used to describe what was earlier referred to as women’s movies or movies with melodramatic, sentimental, mushy themes.  They are actually movies that appeal more to the typical woman rather than the man.

These films can be categorized as comedies or sentimental tear jerkers with plenty of female characters. Included in these types of movies is Cinderella –like fairy stories about romance and love or regarding feminine bonding with lots of monologues.

The Notebook (2004)

This is a romantic drama movie which is directed be Nick Cassavetes and based on a novel by Nicholas Sparks.

It stars Ryan Gosling and Rachel McAdams and is based on a love story of the 1940s.  The story is actually told by James Garner who is an old man who narrates it to his nursing home resident.

Love Actually (2003)

A romantic film with comedy in it and directed by Richard Curtis.  There are ten separate stories with various individuals involved who are later interlinked.

The whole cast is composed of British actors and it is set in London.  It starts before Christmas and the whole movie is played out till the Christmas holiday begins.

Mean Girls (2004)

It is a teenage comedy film which is American/Canadian based and taken partly from the book Queen Bees and Wannabes written by Rosalind Wiseman about high school girls’ social cliques and how it affects the girls.  The film stars Lindsay Lohan.

A walk to remember (2002)

This is an American romantic film based on a novel by Nicholas Sparks starring Shane West and the pop singer Mandy Moore.  The film’s director is Adam Shankman and it is produced by Denise Di Novi for Warner Brothers.

Miss Congeniality (2000)

This is an American police comedy directed by Donald Petrie and stars Sandra Bullock, Michael Caine, and Benjamin Bratt.  Sandra Bullock and Benjamin Bratt are special agents of the FBI and they receive a terrorist threat against the Miss United States Beauty pageant.

Bridget Jones’s Diary (2001)

It is a British romance and comedy film based on a novel by Helen Fielding and stars Renee Zellweger who is an Academy winner and Hugh Grant who is a Golden Globe Winner.

Freaky Friday (2003)

This is also based on a novel by Mary Rodgers and tells the story of how their bodies are exchanged due to a magical Chinese fortune cookie.

Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl (2003)

This is a fantasy film full of adventure based on the novel Pirates of the Caribbean ride.
